Cochliomyia hominivorax

Known as New World screwworm, feeds in the living tissue of warm blood animals and causes by screwworm myiasis, a disease that is fatal to animals in seven days to tend days if left untreated.

It is important parasitic insect pest in Neotropical regions. New World screwworm myiasis is caused by the larvae stage of the fly infecting tissues of warm blooded vertebrates.

This species represents a serous threat to the livestock sector.

It was named screwworm from the wriggling and twisting appearance of the larva when burrowing into flesh.

Adult oviposit in any open wound, the umbilicus of newborns even minor cuts. The eggs hatch into white, slender maggots that feeds in healthy tissue within the wound.

Cochliomyia hominivorax are attracted to wounds on healthy animals by the odour from the seroanguineous exudates, particularly if already infested with conspecific larvae.

Infested animals become nervous and make frantic attempts to scratch and lick the afflicted majority area; the majority of untreated cases end in the death of the animal.

The genus are particularly importance, infesting cattle, horses, pigs, goats, sheep, and hogs. Humans may suffer ingestions with dire results.
