Symptoms of salmonellosis

Outbreaks of salmonellosis occur primarily in the warmer months. Most cases are the result of the consumption of contaminated foods, primarily chicken, eggs, beef, and pork products.

Persons infected with Salmonella may develop moderate to severe cases of salmonellosis, with symptoms lasting form 4 to 7 days on average.

Salmonellosis produces several symptoms. These include diarrhea that be bloody, stomach cramping that be severe fever, vomiting, chills and occasionally, nausea.

Dehydration is also a common threat and cause of hospitalization.

The onset of symptoms can take anywhere from 6 to 72 hours, but usually occurs around 12 hours after consuming the contaminated food or beverage.

Symptoms of gastroenteritis appear 4 to 5 days after ingestion of contaminated food or water. Diarrhea lasts 3 to 5 days and is accompanied by fever and abdominal pain.
